Writer’s chair

There is one thing that has bothered me for a while now. When you move around alot is not a problem to take your computer with you. Most of us are proud owners of a laptop, so wherever you go, you take it with you. Chairs are a different story. A writer’s chair needs to be comfortable (When is say comfortable, I don’t mean Ralph Lauren’s chair comfortable) and affordable, which is rarely possible. Above all it should be packable and this is where I declare this mission impossible. A little tip for my globetrotter colleagues: Keep a few hundred bucks in your secret hidding place wherever you go. Altough, if you are in your early twenties you might not even care. And why would you? Who gives a bibble about lower back pain anyway.

I stepped into the office without knocking and before I could even say Dr. Huggel he opened his mouth.
“Parallel universes didn’t exist before today. We just started creating them.”
“Them?”
Here at the surface, the heavy machine from deep below sounded like a airplane carrier passing at full speed behind the office wall.
“Rick, we spent all these years worrying about nuclear holocaust and terrorism but it’s only now that we are facing true extinction.”
“Nonsense,” I thought and whipped my palms on my lab coat. It wasn’t that I was unconformable in his presence, right now I was scared. “What exactly do you mean?”
The deep hum was now distant, the machine was slowing down.
“At this very moment the other universe is expanding uncontrollably.”
“What? Will it collide with our own?”
“Hell yes!” A minute ago he was yelling but now his voice was calmer and deeply disturbing. “Until today everything was just a fantastic theory.” He grinded his teeth at the last syllable. “We hoped for the best, but in our business it is always like whatever happens, happens. And it is happening. Now.”
“So how will we know if there is another one? I mean another universe.”
“What exactly is your job at the Institute?”
“My duties are not science related. Mostly, I talk to the press and parade around in the Institute’s shiny blue jacket. When something goes wrong, of course.”
“Of course. Where was I?”
In his presence I felt like I was constantly shrinking. I guess that’s what the Big Crunch feels like. “You were saying something about the other universe.”
”Yeah, let me explain it to you. Although, I’m pretty sure you are not going to remember a damn thing.” He coughed to get my full attention. “You won’t notice anything. It’s the other universe that will do the noticing.”
“What if the universes collide like galaxies do?” This guy wasn’t meant to be a scientist, I could easily imagine him as an army sergeant. He pulled up his sleeves and stared right at me.
“Are you jerking me around, you little..?”
The hum didn’t sound like a carrier. It was more like two unsynchronized ferry engines. My vision started to double so I took my glasses off to rub my eyes. Still they were two of them, and I even heard the echo of his words. He must have heard the same echo because he turned his head and saw another Erwin Huggel, PhD, screaming his head off. It wasn’t a pleasant sight even for him, well – them. And that was not the worse part. The second Dr. Huggel had just turned on his machine. And there were more of them coming. Pretty soon, universes will be popping up like crazy. The problem was they were going to do it inside our universe.
”You better talk to the press right away kiddo. Kiddo. Kiddo.”
I left his office, I couldn’t take all that yelling.
“You see, we might just end up killing ourselves at the end. End. End.” were his last words as I left. I was already down the hall trying to evade dozens of myself walking in the opposite direction. I wondered how I will explain this to the press. Well, some of me will. I just hoped someone already turned off that damn thing underground.
